Los Flamingos Hotel in Acapulco, Mexico, is undoubtedly one of my favorites. The hotel was built in 1932 and is located on top of the highest cliffs of Acapulco. In the 50s, Los Flamingos was sold to a member of the famous “Hollywood gang,” Johnny Weissmuller (Olympic Swimmer and original Tarzan), who lived in the biggest suite in the hotel until his death. Stars of Hollywood’s “Golden Era,” such as Cary Grant, John Wayne, and Rex Allen, came here to lounge by day and party by night.
The spectacular thing about this place is the view of the endless ocean and the gorgeous pink paint that covers most walls. Today, the rooms are very basic, and the furniture is tired. However, it adds to the charm of the hotel. The feeling of old Hollywood, exclusivity, and glamour still remains, even though very faded.
My favorite addition is the artist Don Hugo, who lives in the hotel permanently. He may be the most effortlessly cool man I have ever encountered and is the unsung hero of Acapulco, in my opinion.
