“Let the nature do its job and heal you. There’s so much more power to that than we actually think”
– Novak Djokovic
Two weeks I came across this wonderful conversation between Jay Shetty and Novak Djokovic, on Jay’s ON PURPOSE podcast. I was elated partly because I love tennis and partly because I’m fascinated by Djokovic (as I think most people are).
I have always found that some of the best life advice often comes from athletes, who not only cultivate incredible discipline in their physical training but also dedicate themselves deeply to mental resilience. For tennis players, this is especially true.
One of the things Djokovic talks about is that it’s unrealistic to expect constant positivity, even monks and spiritual teachers experience negative thoughts. The difference lies in training the mind not to stay stuck in them. He sees the brain as a muscle that requires daily practice – pausing, resting, choosing healthy habits and especially connecting with nature. For him, spending time outdoors, especially walking uphill and immersing in the elements are simple yet powerful ways to find presence, release dark emotions and reconnect with a sense of strength and clarity.
From around minute 35, Djokovic dives into these practices and philosophies on life. I found this section particularly full of wisdom, beautifully expressed and perfectly aligned with many of the values I hold dear. It’s also presented in a way that’s fun, relatable and easy to imitate.
Overall, it’s an inspiring and uplifting listen and I thought it was the perfect thing to share. Enjoy!
